For someone who doesn’t enjoy or understand the idea of high society themes in film, Dil Dhadakne Do doesn’t initially present itself as a go-to option. However one major reason this movie would attract all movie goers in the first few days is its powerful ensemble cast comprising a fine mix of veteran and new age actors (stars rather) and the filmmaker’s portfolio.
However, once you are in, you would notice how unsparing Zoya Akhtar (director) is about the similarity between the mentality of a high class family in India and any other class of family. Things become bigger and much worse, the richer you are, and the bigger your circle is. For outsiders, taking the easy route is easiest for people of this class. But the fear of justifying your actions to so many people is far more frightening than what it appears to be.

The film has many elements (no spoilers here) that highlight backward mentalities bounded by age old traditions that are prevalent in India, because of the fear of the society. A couple treating their own daughter as an object of some other house right from the beginning. Lovers not being able to unite because of class differences. Forcing a married girl to get pregnant. A wife suffering from inferiority complex who sticks with her husband for the fear of losing him. And covering all of that up by polite words and conversations between thick walls.
If you look at it from the point of view of a movie, it is enjoyable, with a decent storyline, well spread out punches and subtle performances. But attention to detail, especially for audiences who can relate to conservative societies, offers lots more. Obviously, a film alone cannot present the best possible option for you in real life, because everyone is dealing with a different situation in real life, but the way a clarity of thought develops among the confused protagonists in ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’ is surely an inspiration.
Egoes clash wherever freedom of opinion is not appreciated. And that is why the name of the film is ‘Dil Dhadakne Do’, which means ‘Let the heart beat’ in Hindi. It is all about giving your loved ones the space to give themselves a chance in life. It is not about fearing the society if the important people in your life are going against the norms. It is about supporting them.
Or at least trying to understand their feelings-with an open mind, and a bit of heart as well.
