Japan wants to export advanced technologies for coal-fired power plants

Written by RAJIV GUPTA

According to Japan’s environment minister, Mrs. Tamayo Marukawa, advanced technologies implemented in coal-fired power plants can help reduce the otherwise alarming rate of global warming. According to Marukawa, exports of such technologies will help the fight against global warming. This statement came a week after the members of the Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) decided to cut subsidies on export of technology for coal-fired power plants.

She made this statement during the OECD talks in Paris, merely a week before the United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD) talks involving around 200 countries that will take place from 30 November onwards in the same city. Although, she also agreed that the decision taken by the OECD members will finally assist Japan’s long-term strategy of cutting on the levels of carbon dioxide emitted in the air because of the continuous consumption of coal for industrial production.

Marakuwa’s statement is actually quite significant, considering that many developing and developed countries hugely depend on such coal-fired power plants for their production. But what Marakuwa is really advocating is the use of advanced technologies to curb the emissions of coal-powered power plants. She believes that such exports not only help the recipient countries in curbing against environment, they even help the economy of the nations (Japan in this case) exporting such power plants.

Japan is number five on the list of the countries emitting most amount of Carbon Dioxide. However, their goal is to cut down on the greenhouse emissions caused by their country by 26 percent (from 2013) by 2030.

Marukawa believes Japan can contribute enough to fight against global warming. This is because their coal technology is far efficient than that of most other nations.

Marukawa is planning to feature among the representatives from Japan who will attend the summit.
